CORE PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To provide Shariah advisory, assurance, and oversight in terms of AAOIFI Shariah Standards as interpreted by the Shariah Supervisory Board of the Bank.
MAIN FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
SHARIAH SUPERVISORY BOARD MEETINGS
• Prepares primary research reports and submissions that may be required from time to time.
• Prepares draft agendas and minutes of Shariah meetings.
• Assists in preparing the packs for the Shariah meetings.
• Attends and provides input at Shariah meetings as and when required.
ALBARAKA UNIT TRUST FUNDS
• Prepares primary research reports and submissions that may be required from time to time.
• Prepares draft agendas and minutes of Shariah meetings.
• Assists in preparing the packs for the Shariah meetings.
• Attends and provides input at Shariah meetings as and when required
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
• Conducts primary research for the development of new products and for enhancement of existing
products.
• Assists in project management of new products and enhancement of existing products and services.
• Assists in drafting and analysing legal agreements.
• Develops Shariah checklists, procedures, and policies for the various products and services.
• Engages in ongoing research, conducts industry research, and prepares reports on new trends in the Islamic financial industry.
• Examines existing compilations of Islamic rulings (fatawa) and related research papers and prepares summary reports on the findings of interest to the bank.
• Prepares articles on contemporary issues related to Islamic banking and finance with a view to publish them on Al Baraka Bank’s Newsletter and/ or External Media.
SHARIAH TRAINING AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
• Develops training material and provides training to employees.
• Provides guidance and support to consultants on Shariah related matters.
• Attends to client’s Shariah related queries.
• Assists in all matters related to Shariah compliance of Al Baraka Bank, old mutual Albaraka funds and any other investments submitted to Shariah department for review and/or guidance.
QUALIFICATIONS
• An advanced qualification in Shariah Law and relevant qualification in conventional law and/or finance will be required to meet the requirements of the role at the highest level of competence
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
• A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in the financial services industry.

• Islamic Commercial Law
• Understanding of Islamic finance product structures
• Islamic research analysis skills
• Islamic product development skills
• Awareness of industry trends, constraints, and opportunities
• General Shariah, legal, finance and accounting skills
• Computer and information technology literacy
